She's here! Ela Nasceu

Sweet beautiful Gabi was born on August 28th  after 24 hrs of hard labor.  I was able to endure the back labor pains until 18 hrs then I begged for the epidural.  Gabriela was worthy all the pain and more. She is a beautiful and healthy little girl, who weighed 6.4 lb and measured 18 inches.  She is such a blessing in our life!  Thank you for the prayers, they worked!  Praise God for our precious Gabriela Galarraga!  Pictures will be coming soon...  Right now time is limited!  Breastfeeding and caring for a newborn is a full-time job.  I have not slept more than 4 hours a night since last Saturday!

One of our last moments as a family of 2

Nelson and I got to go to watch Barcelona play at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, which is an amazing venue with the largest screen in the world, I believe!  The game was awesome, Nelson was so thrilled to see them play live!  It was my 1st live soccer game to watch - it is a very unique experience!  We both loved it!

Almost there!

I cant believe that Gabi can come any day now!  I will be 39 weeks on Wednesday and I have to be ready for her now!  I still wish I had the house cleaner and done more reading, more prepping, etc... However, we are really anxious to meet her too! We went to the Doctor last Friday and had a sonogram on Wednesday.  She is 6.5 lb (3 kg quasi), with an error margin of + or - 1lb!  The Doctor said she has come down some from last time but I an not dilated yet.  My uterus is still measuring small despite her weight being adequate.  I feel some cramping, leg muscle spasms and the "nesting syndrome," which makes me believe she is coming very soon!  My mood has changed some too, poor Nelson!
We decided to hire a Dula to help with delivery and to empower us to try the natural experience.  I have my birth plan ready to go and a list of reasons why I want to avoid any pain meds.  I know that I cannot predict how birth is going to be and I am flexible in case my plans change... I will try my best to do it with as little intervention as possible though.  Some think I am crazy but many support us in our decision.  I don't know if I will have a chance to update this blog once more before she is finally born... Again, thank you for your prayers!  What really matters is that she is born healthy and that God will guide us from birth on how to raise her to be a godly girl and bring honor to His Name.

Peca rapido pois ela vai nascer a qualquer hora!

OBGYN Visit

We saw the doctor again last Friday and had to do a non-stress test to check her heart rate in relation to her movements.  All is well with her - she was asleep at 1st so they had to wake her up with a buzzer and then she started moving and her heart rate went up.  She is moving a little less now due to less room.  I am feeling a lot of leg cramps/spasms which the doctor said is normal since she may be pressing on a nerve that causes that.  So far, there is no signs of eminent labor... she has not yet descended and my cervix has not effaced (shortened).  I do get the Braxon Hicks contractions though (which are common at this point in pregnancy).  Nelson and I are still preparing for her.  I am now making a bag of pain coping tools (music, images, oils, massage tools, hot/ice packs, aromotherapy, etc) since I don't plan to get an epidural (unless I need an emergency c-section or pitocin).  Please pray for Gabi to be born healthy and for a smooth labor... I am scared of the pain and complications!  Thank you!

Our 5th anniversary party in Brazil

American Pregnancy Newsletter - Gabi's development

How big is your baby?

Your baby is continuing to grow and most likely measures between 17 to 18 inches long and weighs 5 ½ to 6 pounds.*

What is happening with your baby?

The vast majority of your baby's growth is complete by 35 weeks. His/her kidneys are completely developed, and the liver is beginning to process waste. Because your baby has grown so much, you will notice that he/she will no longer be performing an aerobic workout. There just is not enough room for somersaults. However, this does not mean you will not feel your baby move. Her kickboxing routine should stay the same.

- o cerebro continuara desenvolvendo bastante.  Ela continua ativa mas ja nao pode me chutar tao forte!  Afinal, ela ja esta mais apertadinha...

Sonogram - 35 or 36 weeks??

After a long time, we finally got to see Gabi again!  Can you believe she is already ~6lb!  I need to lay off the nightly frozen yogurt!  She is developing well and gaining weight fast!  The last sonogram estimated her due date to be on August 25th!  The earlier ultrasounds calculated the due date on 8/28 or 8/27... Only God knows when she will come.  We just better be ready for her!  We are truly excited that she is almost here!

Our Hospital Selection- O hospital que escolhemos

The last few weeks...

As I am approaching my due date, we had to make some final decisions:  We finally decided where to deliver Gabi - the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, which is a very nice hospital and has the designation of being Baby Friendly (meets a set of criteria that favors breast feeding practices).  You can see an overview video of the hospital's maternity services by going to the website: http://www.texashealth.org/body.cfm?id=997 or by checking the You-tube video attached on the side.
I was fortunate to attend a Breastfeeding conference last week (mandatory for my work), which refreshed my memory on breastfeeding benefits, complications and trouble-shooting.  I learned much about current research and resources, and feel ready to do whatever it takes to breastfeed Gabi!  It is the best thing I can do for her!
Mariela is visiting us this week (she came earlier for a Mary Kay conference she has in Dallas) and is helping us prepare for Gabi.  Nelson installed 1of the car seats and we washed and organized Gabi's clothes, sheets, etc.  I finally packed for the hospital and made a time-line of what needs to be done in the next few weeks.
Nelson and I will be meeting with a Dula a few times in August who will practice some pain coping mechanisms with us.  So far, we think we will not have a Dula attend our birth for different reasons.
Gabi had her 4th baby shower!  The ladies at a Brazilian church, where I go for a Woman's Bible Study, threw her a beautiful shower that included a wonderful dinner and some fun games.  Mari came earlier so she could attend it with me.  I will post the pictures once I get them.

I will be going for my next sonogram on Wednesday.  My new doctor does not believe in having a sonogram each visit.  He did check my belly and told me how she is positioned and listened to her heartbeat.  I miss seeing her though and am looking forward to having an estimate of her current weight.   I am feeling well for the most part and have a huge appetite...  Please keep us in your prayers - That Gabi will come full-term (after 37 weeks) and that she is healthy.  I am also praying for the delivery - I hope to avoid a C-section!  I do trust God and know that He is in control and will be with us!

Obrigada.

8 meses/ 8 months

I have gained 20lb so far and have a huge appetite!  I need to control myself, especially when it comes to sweets!  I have been feeling well but get tired more often.  I am now exercising only 4 times a week bc I am much busier preparing for her arrival and for the delivery.

My work was very kind to throw me a surprise baby shower at our last staff meeting!  They decorated the room, ordered a very deliscious and beautiful cake, and gave Gabi very cute gifts.  My coworkers gave us a very generous gift card!  She is already spoiled with all she has been receiving.  A friend of the family, Mary Jo, mails her a cute outfit on a weekly basis!  She has so many adorable clothes - can't wait to see her wearing them.

Change of doctors/ Mudanca de medico

For various reasons, Nelson and I decided to change doctors and hospital last month.  I have been busy transferring all my classes and health record to the new provider.  We had our 1st appt. with him last Thursday and very pleased with him and the office staff.  He did a very through examination and told us that Gabi is already at the right position for delivery.
Now we need to choose the hospital:  Baylor in Carrollton or Presbyterian in Plano.  We toured the Baylor at Carrollton today and were very happy with the nurses and their effort to promote breast-feeding.  We will be taking some classes in the Presby at Plano and then making a final decision about the where to deliver Gabi.  We will keep you updated.  Please pray for us as make such decisions and approach Gabi's due date (August 31st).  I really hope she will be full term (38-42 weeks).  We plan to have her naturally if possible - no meds or intervention unless it is necessary.  I have been reading on how to prepare for pain management and we are enrolled for delivery preparation classes in August.

31 weeks, 31 semanas

At this point Gabi measures over 16 inches long and weighs about 3.3 pounds (as much as 3 navel oranges) and is heading into a growth spurt.  She's moving a lot, especially at night and after I eat. I can see my belly moving sometimes, it is very exciting.

At this point, we have most of the essentials for when she is born and have started organizing her room.  All her clothes are put up nicely in her dresser and closet (see picture),  She will be very well dressed!

We registered for birthing classes and started looking for her pediatrician.  I am preparing myself by reading a few birthing and baby care books.  There is so much to learn and to prepare!  She better not arrive earlier!

Espero q ela nao nasca adiantada!

Is anyone out there?

I do have a lot of new pictures and new comments to post but I haven't had the time to do so yet.  I would like to know rather people are visiting this blog before I even take the limited time I have to post them.  These next few weeks will be insanely busy so I need to prioritize my to do list...  If you are reading my blog, please comment and I will continue to update it.  Thank you for your feedback.  Having a baby requires a lot of preparation!

Se alguem tiver visitando meu blog, me escreva 1 comentarion. Se vc visita meu blog, me fala assim eu posso decidir continuar escrevendo nele.  Obrigada!

Big Thank You!!!

This is an overdue "thank you!" for all of those who blessed Gabriela with all the generous gifts and participation in our baby showers!  We were amazed at the most needed and beautiful gifts that she received!  She already has a lot more clothes than I do!  We are so blessed to already have her crib, mattress, dresser, stroller, car seats, rocking chair, high chair, play area, crib sheets, the cutest outfits, and much more - thanks to your generosity! We truly appreciate those who organized Gabi's baby showers- Mariela & Nelson, Tina & Lucas, Mary Jo, Maureen, Ginny, Kathy, and those who also helped!

7 months of joy!

Visiting her grandparents - visitando os avos

First, I apologize for not writting last Sunday - I do have a valid excuse: I was hospitalized again due to another kidney infection.  I really believe the bacteria was not completely killed from the last time and the infection reoccurred.  This time my fevers were higher and tylenol wasn't working... After 3 days of antibiotics in my vain, the symptoms improved and I was discharged.  At least, I got to know the postpartum nurses very well!  Thank you for the prayers and the visits - they meant a lot to me and helped me recover quickly!

We are now in Atlanta visiting Mariela and Nelson, relaxing and spending time with all my in-laws.  It is so nice to be near them and talk about Gabi with them.  Mari, Tina, and Mary Jo are going to throw me a baby shower next Saturday - I am so excited about that!  After investing hours and hours in registering and regestering it will be fun to see some of the stuff that we selected for Gabi.  I am also looking forward to experiencing her 1st baby shower.  I will add pictures once I get back to Texas (6/6).

I saw the OBGYN last Wednesday and he did a through exam on me this time and ordered my blood sugar test - which I will get the result on Tuesday.  I am a little nervous because I do not want to do the 3 hour test again!  The lady at the lab was new and did not know what she was doing - she used the wrong needle and could not draw my blood... Someone else had to come and stick me again to complete a test tube.... My arm is still sore!

The doctor said everything looks good and the sonogram was normal.  Gabi was moving so much during it that the lady had a hard time getting her heart rate and good pictures... I will post them later (even though the quality was not as good this time).

Depois eu adicionarei as fotos do sonograma (nao sairam tao claras desta vez...)

Babies"R"Us - Baby Registry

We finally finished our registry!!  I have probably spent 20 hours on it!  It takes a lot of planning, researching, and choosing to complete it!  We included everything that Gabi will need during her 1st year.  We have registered at Target and Babies"R"us.  Please click on the links below to access our registries:
Babies"R"Us - Baby Registry
 https://www.target.com/registry/baby/37FLKW32AE1KD
We will have a shower in Atlanta hosted by Mariela and Tina with the help of Mary Jo (6/4); and one in Texas at Maureen's house with the assistance of Kathy Wolf (TBA).

 Babies"R"Us - Baby Registry
Adorariamos receber visitas tambem!  Assim vc pode vir fazer compras aqui!

Happy mother's day!

Nelson was a sweetheart and gave me a rose with a balloon and a very nice card!  That was my 1st mother's day gift! I also got chocolate at the church we visited this morning!
I wish all the mothers who read my blog a wonderful mother's day - You all deserve much more than 1 day per year!!

Hospitalization/hospitalizacao

I had my 1st pregnancy complication - my urinary tract infection (UTI) led to a kidney infection...  I was hospitalized for 3 days and was on IV fluids and antivbiotics.  Although I improved quickly, I had to stay there until I was 48 hrs fever free. I am very mad that they were giving me 540 kcal of pure dextrose when I was eating perfectly well... I don't know why they had to do that...  The hospital stay was not too bad except for the fact that they wake you up every 4 hours.  I don't know who decided to take daily weights at 4 am... I certainly disliked that!  Overall, I had a very good feel for the postpartum nurses and room, which I will most likely be after delivering.  I did like all the 5 RNs that assisted me, they were all very nice.  I liked that each nurse had to come check Gabi's heartbeat, which was normal for the most part.  It was a little accelerated when I had a fever, but it went back to normal.  Apparently, she dislikes that noise bc she always moved once they found her heartbeat.  She even moved the monitor once!
The kitchen always messed up my orders, but the food was acceptable.  I am glad to be home and well, no longer hooked to an IV!  Thank you so much for all your prayers - they worked well!  On the same day I was admitted into the hospital, Nelson had a car accident but thanks to God nothing happened to him.  Praise God for his protection!  I believe we will need a new car...

I planned to add a picture, but the camera died the second that Nelson was clicking on it....  I will have it uploaded by Wednesday.  I will see my OBGYN on Friday and will have more news then.

Baby's Development (~23 weeks) - O desenvolvimento do bebe (~23 semanas)

Check out this video to see how Gabriela should be growing according to her gestational age:
http://www.babycenter.com/2_inside-pregnancy-weeks-21-to-27_10312242.bc
She now must be more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound (about as much as a large mango).  Blood vessels in her lungs are developing to prepare for breathing, and she can hear sounds that are loud enough! Nelson now needs to start playing for her! Check this picture:  http://www.babycenter.com/fetal-development-images-23-weeks

I finally started feeling her move!  She moves a lot at night usually.  Nelson has also been able to feel her by putting his hand on my belly!  It is very exciting!

Ela ja deve medir uns 28 cm e pesar 1/2 kg.  veja a foto: http://www.babycenter.com/fetal-development-images-23-weeks.

Hospital or Birthing Center???

I was bad and did not get to update the blog last Sunday - my appologies.  It was Easter and I went to my friend's house (25 minutes away) and got stuck there due to a storm/tornado warning...

This past week I visited a birthing center here in Denton, which I loved but it is "out-of-network" with my insurance, thus, it will cost more than the hospital.  I will contact my insurance to see if I can get an "out-of-network" exception, which may be possible since this place it is so much more economical than a hospital.  I was pleased to learn that this place has medical equipment in case the baby needs to be intubated (can't breath) or resuscitated (which I am sure will not be the case).  If I end up needing medical intervention, I could be in a hospital within 5 minutes. In addition, the midwives at this facility are very experienced and well prepared to deliver babies - they receive extensive training. If you like, you can find more info by checking their website: http://www.inannabirth.com/

Yesterday, I went to the hospital where my doctor delivers (Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital) due to an urinary tract infection (UTI). I have started antibiotics and am fighting a fever now...
I was stuck there for 2 hours just to get a prescription... Thus, I did not have a very good impression.  However, I was pleased to find out that the nursing staff supports breastfeeding, there is a lactation consultant there, and they encourage skin-to-skin contact during the 1st 30 minutes after birth.  If someone is in the room with me (awake), I can keep the baby there to facilitate breastfeeding. For more info, here is the website: http://www.texashealth.org/default.cfm?id=1

I have not yet decided rather we will deliver at the hospital or a birthing center.  I need to evaluate the pros and cons and do some more research about the negative effects of an epidural - so I can be convinced to go all natural...  I do like my doctor quite a bit but I also like the flexibility and the environment of the birthing center.  I will let you all know once we make a decision.  Feel free to express your opinion and past experience.

Last OBGYN's appt. A ultima visita ao medico

During this last appt. they performed a "screening" sonogram which looked at all her  major body parts (spine, hands, face, etc.).  Thanks to God all  is looking normal.  Although she was at a breech position, my doctor said that is normal. Apparently she doesn't have Spina Bifida or cleft palate (I really hope not!).  She is about 12 oz, which places her at the 70th percentile weight for gestational age (she is somewhat heavier than other babies at 5 months gestation)!!!  She was too curled up so we don't know her length.  She was moving and even said hi by showing us her little hand!!  It was awesome!  Nelson felt her move last night since he had his hand on my belly.  I also felt something!  It is an amazing feeling!

Gracas a Deus tudo parece estar normal!

HALF WAY THERE!! METADE DA GRAVIDEZ

I am sorry for those of you who checked the website yesterday looking for a new post... The day went by really fast and it was time for me to go to bed when I realized I had not posted anything new... Sorry, the pregnant lady had to rest...
I can't believe I am 1/2 way through this pregnancy - time goes by so fast!!  I will complete my 20th week this Wednesday!  Check out this video that I saw on www.babycenter.com (a very neat website that sends me emails weekly about my pregnancy stage):

http://www.babycenter.com/2_inside-pregnancy-weeks-15-to-20_10308111.bc

This past Friday, Nelson and I started our baby registry - I never thought that would be so hard: Babies"R"us is so huge and has so many options for everything... They gave me a huge shopping list of things that Gabi will "supposedly" need during her 1st year of life.  I really need to sit down with someone who can tell me what we really need/must have before we can complete this registry...

Now I have started looking into birthing options.  I have a lot to read and research in order to decide if I want a natural birth and if I need a dula.  The information out there is overwhelming.  We plan to visit a birthing center and the hospital where my OGYN delivers soon (Denton Presbyterian).

By the way, thank you much for the comments and tips - I really appreciate them.  I love the elastic idea on my paints!

I will be going to my 5th OBGYN visit this Friday - Thus, I will have new sonogram pictures by Sunday!!  I will also update my own belly pictures then.

almost 18 weeks! Quasi 2 meses e meio...

Engordei 2.5 kg, a maioria no Brasil (comendo umas 4 mil calories/dia)!!

I cannot believe that I am almost half way through this pregnancy!!  My pants will no longer close so I had to start buying maternity clothes!  I gained about 5.5 lb, and most of my weight gain happened while I was in Brazil and I probably ate 4,000 kcal/d!! We already started shopping for Gabi as well - which is a delightful and dangerous experience.  i filled a small box with all her stuff (clothes and books).   Soon I should start feeling her move... Can't wait.

I plan to start adding stuff to my blog every Sunday.  Please make comments as I love reading them!

IT IS A GIRL!!! GABRIELA!! E' MENINA!

I will post the pictures later...  But we know that she is a girl despite the male predominance in our families.  We are thrilled and very excited to know that so far everything looks normal and that we are having a girl!  Good thing that we already had a name for her!  Now we have more time to decide on a boys name (maybe in 2-3 years).  She is 1/4 lb and is growing well.  Soon I should start feeling her.  The heartbeat is strong (145).

A familia do meu pai tinha razao quanto ao sexo!  Eu adicionarei as fotos depois!

3 months!

Today I officially completed 3 months of pregnancy!  I have gained about 2lb in the 1st trimester despite eating a whole lot more!  I am really trying to eat mostly healthy foods but I have been weak when it comes to resisting sweets... From now on, I need to gain about 1lb/week and eat more protein -which I will.
I can see my belly pocking out!  I have not yet felt the baby - unless I did and didn't recognize it.  It seems like it is normal to feel him/her moving after the fourth month. I praise God for blessing me with a smooth and uneventful 1st trimester! I hear the 2nd trimester is easier!  The only problem from now on is that I will soon need bigger clothing - I will need to invest on maternity clothes (Thank you Mary Jo and George for the very welcomed gift card - I will send you a picture with my new clothes later)!

Tao lindo(a)! Deus estara sempre cuidando do nosso bebe!  Por favor comentem!  Eu adoro ler as respostas!

We went to my 2nd OBGYN appt. last Friday and saw our 2nd sonogram, which was amazing - the baby was moving and jumping!  We saw his/her head, body, arms, and hands!  We even heard the strong and fast heartbeat!  It is an indescribable feeling!  We will try attaching the sonogram pictures later.  The MD said everything looks great and that my estimated due date is 08/31/11!  I did some routine blood work and will know the results next week!  My risk of having a miscarriage fell from ~50% to ~2%!!  We are very relieved and joyful to learn that!  Thank you for the prayers!  Please comment on my posts - I love reading your answers!  I will keep you updated as I receive more news and will post some pictures soon!

update 2

Tomorrow I will complete 11 weeks!  I am so excited about going to the doctor on Friday!  I cannot wait for it... especially to see the sonogram.  I have been extremely hungry lately!  I even woke up at 5:30 AM the other day starving after I dreamed about food all night!  I guess the baby is growing well despite the fact that I have barely gained 2 lb.

Traducao do "post" anterior

Pregnancy details

According to the OBGYN's estimation, we conceived between December 06 and 10th and will deliver around August 30th! That means that today I am about 10 1/2 weeks!  I will be entering the 3rd month and completing my 1st trimester on February 16th!  A few days after Valentine's Day... Nelson and I will be celebrating in double at a good Italian restaurant in Corinth - "Del Camilo's"
We are going to our 2nd doctor's visit this upcoming Friday (2/11).  Our 1st appt. was on 1/11/11, when we saw our 1st sonogram!  We were so thrilled and amazed!  Words cannot express the feelings we experienced...
We found out we were pregnant right after Christmas (12/26) after taking a couple tests - and then confirmed it on the following day by going to my Family Doctor.  Interestingly, I dreamed that I took 2 pregnancy tests that came out positive on the previous night!  It is like God was informing me about the pregnancy!
So far, God has blessed us with a smooth pregnancy!  I have only experienced mild nausea and other gastrointestinal distress.  I have not been sick at all and am feeling well for the most part!  This is good news, especially considering that the 1st trimester is suppose to be the toughest!  Thank you for your prayers!  God has been listening to them!

I have been eating healthier and more often. I have had some cravings for frozen yogurt, fish, and lemon cookies (not together!). I started cooking more often and have baked some very healthy desserts (that Nelson disliked...).  I have gained ~1 lb so far but I can see my belly sticking out.  We will post some pictures later that will show you how I have grown!  I will be posting more information after I see the Doctor on Friday.
